Did you know that redheads and ruddy ducks commonly lay their eggs in the nests of other waterfowl species, like cowbirds do? Neither did I.

Far out! I just found out yesterday that “cuckold” is derived from “cuckoo” due to the European species’ same habits.
Of course I didn’t know that but I did know about the Cowbirds…
I love that photo :o)
Huh. You learned me sumfin.
Laura is a smart lady!
Well whaddya know about that. I did know about the cowbirds; in fact, when I was atlassing last spring, we saw a mama robin feeding a young cowbird that must’ve grown up in her nest.
Great pic!
Ahem–a redhead weighing in here, but not a ducky one. Isn’t it amazing the ways that nature accommodates to need–laying eggs in someone else’s nest–why not? Save all that building time.
